The legend of Saint Patrick and Irish Whiskey

The legend

St. Patrick, an Irish monk, introduced the art of distillation in Ireland after his visit to Egypt and the importation of the still in 432. He would thus be at the origin of the famous Irish whiskey or "uisce beatha", name given by the Irish monks.

Irish Whiskey, its history and its specificities :

Remember that the Irish dominated the world of whiskey until the middle of the 19th century, including Scotland where Irish Whiskey sold 3 times more than Scotch Whiskey. Famine, massive emigration to the United States and the war of independence marked a real halt to production. The descent into hell came at the time of US prohibition, where irish whiskey was the most consumed. It was in 1966 that whiskey was reborn from the ashes with the fusion of "survivors", John Jameson & amp; His, John Power & amp; Its in Dublin and Cork Distillery Company in Cork. They came under the Irish Distillers banner and created the largest distillery in Ireland, New Midleton. Today, Irish Whiskey is so popular that independent distilleries open every year on the Emerald Isle.

The difference with Whiskey? Whiskey generally undergoes a third distillation to bring a light and fruity side. Pure Pot Still, an Irish specificity: Generally a single malt is made only from malted barley. This is not the case for Pure Pot Still where malted and non-malted barley is used.

• Whiskey Bushmills 10 years

Established on the British side of Ireland, Bushmills is the only distillery, with Midleton, having survived the decline of Irish whiskey. Triply distilled, the 10-year-old Bushmills is one of the best-known single malt whiskeys. It is aged mostly in ex-bourbon casks with a small part of ex-sherry cask. It is a full-bodied but gourmet whiskey with vanilla notes, flower honey and spices.

• Whiskey Feckin

Second distillery of Northern Ireland, Echlinville reborn from the ashes after its closure in 1936. It is the only Irish distillery to handle everything locally, from barley production until bottling. The Feckin is the image of Echlinville, a whiskey respecting tradition but definitely in the era of time. This whiskey is easy to drink, unctuous and honeyed. It is well suited to cocktails thanks to its perfect balance.

• Whiskey Redbreast 12 years

The 12-year-old Redbreast is rightly recognized as one of the best Irish Whiskey in the world. It's a Pure Pot Still (50% malted barley and 50% unmalted barley) made from Oloroso Xéres barrels straight from the Midleton distillery. Very expressive, the 12 year old Redbreast is known for its peach and cassis notes.

• Whiskey Connemara

We see you already humming the song of Michel Sardou's name! But did you know that Connemara is the only peaty whiskey in Ireland? This nugget proposed by the Cooley distillery is a blend of whiskey, peated so, aged in bourbon casks and Xéres. Connemara is a powerful whiskey with a smoky present but harmonious thanks to its notes of yellow fruits (peach, apricot).

Ingrédients

• 4 cl d’Irish Whiskey Feckin
• 1,5 cl de jus de citron pressé
• 1,5 cl de sirop de Grenadine
• 1 zeste de citron
• 5 ou 6 glaçon

Présentation

• 1Mettez l’ensemble des ingrédients dans la partie inférieure du shaker.
• 2Refermez et secouer pendant une dizaine de seconde
• 3Filtrez au-dessus du verre martini à l’aide d’une passoire à glaçons.
• 4Prélevez le zeste de citron avec un éplucheur puis pressez-le au-dessus du verre afin d’extraire son essence. Ne le mettez pas dans le verre.
• 5Servez aussitôt.
