The Vintage: What does it really change in wine?

2022, 2021, 2020… On a label, the vintage often catches the eye. But what does it really change in the wine? Is one vintage necessarily better than another? And above all, how do you navigate when choosing?

Spring often marks the arrival of new vintages in the cellar. Behind this simple date lies a whole year of climatic conditions that directly influence the style of the wine.

The vintage, a reflection of a year

The vintage corresponds to the year the grapes were harvested. And since no year is truly alike, each vintage gives the wine its own identity.

Sun, rain, heat, or coolness… these variations directly affect grape ripeness. Even with the same grape variety, on the same plot, and with the same know-how, the result can differ.

The vintage is ultimately the imprint of the year in the glass.

Profiles that evolve depending on conditions

Depending on how the season unfolds, wines can take different directions:

  • warm years: more generous wines, with ripe aromas and a fuller texture
  • cool years: livelier wines, with more freshness and tension
  • balanced years: harmonious wines, between ripeness and liveliness

This is not to say that one style is better than another, but rather to understand what each year has to offer.

Why the same cuvée changes from one vintage to another

Wine is not a fixed product. It evolves with nature, but also with the winemaker’s choices at harvest time.

Two vintages of the same cuvée can therefore present:

  • more or less intense aromas
  • a different structure
  • a variable aging potential

It’s this variation that makes each bottle interesting to discover.

How to choose a vintage

Rather than looking for a "good" or "bad" vintage, it is better to choose according to the moment:

  • for immediate tasting: recent vintages, often more accessible
  • for cellar aging: more structured vintages will evolve further over time
  • for exploration: comparing several vintages of the same wine helps better understand its style

Another way to read wine

The vintage is not just a date on a label. It tells the story of a year, a climate, a balance unique to each harvest.

Understanding the vintage means accepting that wine changes, evolves, surprises… and that’s also what makes every tasting unique.
